Usually, when people think of teenage skin, images of pimples appear. However, while about 90 percent of teenagers experience some form of breakouts, not all teens will develop actual acne.

Most teens, regardless of skin type, will experience a surge in oil production due to the influx of hormones that starts with puberty. Although this leads to breakouts for most teens, not everyone has the acne gene, which makes those with the gene prone to breakouts. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean teens without acne can or should ignore skincare.

In fact, the pre-teen years are the best time to get in the habit of taking care of the skin. Prevention will save a host of skin problems down the road.

Starting off with the right skincare products will help keep skin hydrated and vibrant, plus blemish-free for years to come. Just because someone is a teenager and occasionally has a blemish or two, they do not need an entire regimen for acne. Instead, a spot treatment with natural, specially formulated benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and sulfur is all that’s needed. The Pevonia® SpaTeen® Blemish-B-Gone should be used directly on spots only, and as soon as they appear for a quick, gentle, yet effective clear zone. Most drugstore acne products excessively dry out the skin [for these skin types] and cause redness, irritation and flakiness; in turn, this makes the skin vulnerable to environmental pollutants and bacteria.

SpaTeen All Skin Types Cleanser_PevoniaStep 1: Cleanse

A cleanser that gently, yet thoroughly removes excess oil and debris, minus drying sulfates is primary for keeping pores clear and blemish-free.  Pevonia’s SpaTeen® All Skin Types Cleanser contains lactic and salicylic acids to keep excess dead skin to a minimum. They brighten and exfoliate, too.

Step 2: Tone

Following with an alcohol-free toner to complete the cleansing process is a must. Plus, it helps remove harmful tap water residue. In addition, the SpaTeen® All Skin Types Toner hydrates, heals, brightens and reduces inflammation via hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, calendula, chamomile, allantoin, panthenol and aloe vera.

Always following the toner with a noncomedogenic moisturizer, that contains sun protection, is key for keeping all teen skin hydrated, supple and youthful. The SpaTeen® All Skin Types Moisturizer rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, proline, zinc PCA and lactic acid is an amazing lightweight, yet effective moisturizer.

Weekly: Exfoliate

Exfoliation will help prevent dead skin cell buildup. However, it’s important to avoid harsh scrubs with ground up nutshells, synthetic salicylic or glycolic acid, as well as coarse sponges or puffs. These can cause undue irritation or microscopic abrasions, leaving the skin vulnerable to the environment.

Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser_PevoniaInstead, choose scrubs with micronized walnut shell powder, jojoba wax beads and papaya and pineapple enzymes to gently remove dead skin. Lactic acid, whether in the cleanser, toner or moisturizer, is a great ingredient to gently exfoliate, plus it hydrates the skin. For normal skin, the Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser is ideal to use two to three times per week, while the SpaTeen® Blemished Skin Cleanser can be used a couple times a week for those with blackheads and breakouts that threaten to become more persistent.
